Do I Need BOTOX®?

Choosing the right cosmetic treatment is all about preference and goals. If you want to look younger and aren’t ready for surgical procedures, BOTOX® is a perfect choice. Not all wrinkles are created equally, however.
While some facial lines can be attributed to loss of skin firmness resulting from age, others are the result of frequent expressions, such as frowning and laughing. These often create lines around the mouth, crow’s feet by the eyes, lines on the forehead, and 11s: the parallel lines between the brows.
BOTOX® is the best choice for these expression lines, as it targets the underlying muscles, causing them to relax and soften. As such, BOTOX® and injections that produce a similar effect are referred to as neuromodulators.
Every facial expression starts as a signal in the brain, which travels to the appropriate muscle and triggers a contraction that, for example, raises an eyebrow or lowers a corner of the mouth. BOTOX® and Dysport® “interrupt” this process by preventing the message from arriving at the targeted muscle. This reduces facial activity, resulting in a smoother, more youthful appearance.

BOTOX® and Dysport®: What Causes Dynamic Wrinkles?

Parkins Plastic Surgery oMers BOTOX® and Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) to help reduce the look of fine lines and wrinkles but not all wrinkles are the same. BOTOX® and Dysport® are designed to treat only specific types of wrinkles.

While some facial lines, known as static wrinkles, can be attributed to loss of skin firmness or volume resulting from age, others are the result of frequent expressions, such as frowning and laughing. These often create lines around the mouth, crow’s feet by the eyes, lines on the forehead, and 11s; the parallel lines between the brows. Dynamic wrinkles are visible when you move your facial muscles by smiling, frowning, squinting, or other movements during facial expressions but disappear when your face is relaxed.

BOTOX® and Dysport® are often the best choice for these expression lines, which are also sometimes referred to as dynamic wrinkles, as they target the underlying muscles, causing them to relax and soften. As such, BOTOX® and Dysport®, along with other botulinum toxin injections that produce a similar eMect are referred to as neuromodulators.

Getting older is part of life, but that doesn’t mean you have to accept the lines and wrinkles that come with the natural aging process. Dr. Maida Parkins’ patients often come to them expressing concern over frown lines that are clearly visible on the forehead and between the brows, making them look older than they feel. If you can sympathize, it’s time for BOTOX® and Dysport®.

What are BOTOX® and Dysport®?

“What are BOTOX® and Dysport® used for?” If you’re planning on trying BOTOX® or Dysport®, it’s best to understand how these treatments work.

The first thing to know about BOTOX® and Dysport® is that they’re both made from botulinum toxin, a purified substances that’s derived from bacteria.

BOTOX® and Dysport®: How Do They Compare?

Which is better: BOTOX® or Dysport®? How are BOTOX® and Dysport® diMerent? These are some of the most common questions about neuromodulators. BOTOX® and Dysport® are both botulinum toxin injections with cosmetic uses that last for a similar amount of time and provide similar results. However, though they work the same way and the active ingredient in both is botulinum toxin, BOTOX® and Dysport® have some subtle differences.

For one thing, they are manufactured diMerently. As a result, the dosage for BOTOX® and Dysport®, their onset of eMect, and their results have some subtle diMerences. Dysport® is slightly less potent than BOTOX® because of its molecular weight. The rate of diMusion for BOTOX® and Dysport® differs. Due to its higher rate of diMusion, Dysport® is better at treating larger areas like foreheads but more of the product may be needed to achieve results. The results from Dysport® are more likely to appear faster than BOTOX®. The results for both of these treatments can last up to three to four months on average.

Who is a Good Candidate for BOTOX® and Dysport®?

Choosing the right cosmetic treatment is all about preference and goals. If you want to look younger and aren’t ready for surgical procedures, BOTOX® or Dysport® could be a perfect choice. You may want to consider BOTOX® and Dysport® if you have moderate to severe facial wrinkles, the wrinkles are located in areas that BOTOX® and Dysport® can treat, you’re in good general health, and you have realistic expectations for improvement. You’re not likely to be a good candidate if you have allergies to any ingredient in BOTOX® or other botulinum toxin products, you have a skin infection at the planned site of injection, you’re pregnant or breastfeeding, or you have a severe illness or infection.

Frequently Asked Questions About BOTOX®
and Dysport® Treatments

Will BOTOX® and Dysport® Injections Make My Face Look Frozen?

This is a common misconception with treatments like BOTOX® or Dysport® - that you won’t be able to move your facial muscles at all and will look comically over-treated. However, this “BOTOX® forehead” problem is completely avoidable when you receive treatment from an experienced professional. Dr. Parkins and her staff treat their patients as friends and take care to ensure they love their results. If you decide you would like additional BOTOX® or Dysport® injections, these can always be provided. By taking it slow and following a conservative treatment plan, our team can help you look naturally and beautifully rejuvenated.

Do Injections of BOTOX® and Dysport® Cause Bruising?

The majority of the time there is no bruising after getting BOTOX® or Dysport® treatments. However, it is possible to develop small pinpoint bruises that are easily covered by makeup until they fade on their own. Any redness or minor swelling that occurs resolves within 10 to 15 minutes.

How Long Do Treatment and Recovery for BOTOX® and Dysport® Take?

The procedure itself can be short, depending on how many areas of the face will be treated and how many units of BOTOX® or Dysport® will be added. For many BOTOX® and Dysport® patients, this process takes only a few minutes and requires no recovery. You will be able to return to your daily routine after your procedure.

What Else is Available Aside from BOTOX® and Dysport® Treatments in the Milwaukee and Madison Area?

We oMer many other complementary options and alternatives to BOTOX® or Dysport®, including surgical and non-surgical procedures for facial rejuvenation. Chemical peels, dermaplaning, and microneedling enhance the quality, tone and texture of the skin, addressing not only wrinkles but also other cosmetic concerns.
Facial fillers are injectable soft tissue fillers that add volume when injected. In some cases, a combination of BOTOX® or Dysport® with dermal fillers is the best choice for comprehensively addressing signs of facial aging. This is because, as mentioned above, neuromodulators like BOTOX® or Dysport® treat specific lines known as “dynamic wrinkles,” while fillers reduce lines known as “static wrinkles.” Fillers are also ideal for filling in hollows that develop due to age-related fat and collagen loss in the mid-face, temples, and elsewhere on the face.
Botulinum toxin injections like BOTOX® or Dysport® can often be combined with other procedures to maximize results.
